What this book is

Welcome to a great adventure with kids who pray and with God who answers.

Every Tuesday for more than ten years, teams of children have prayed for the healing and freedom of people of all ages — some they knew, many complete strangers. Barbie was there for the prayers, and she wrote down what happened.

Never Too Little to Pray — a title the kids gave her — is not a collection of cute stories about children. It is a record of what was seen and heard, and of what praying alongside children taught one adult about faith.

I am honored to be your reporter, telling you what I have seen and heard. But more than that, I have been changed by being with children in the presence of God.

The book questions a common assumption: that a child must reach a certain age before they can know God's voice, understand their place in Christ, or lay a hand on someone who is sick and pray. These stories suggest otherwise.

No names appear in the book — only ages, so you can tell one child from another on a team.

One story

After a team of children prayed for a woman in great pain, with badly crippled legs, she got up and walked without pain. One of the boys followed her out of the prayer room and watched her go down the hall.

“She still walks funny. We will have to pray for her again.”

That is a heart that dares to dream with God.

How the book is built

The stories are gathered under the fruit of the Spirit — the nine qualities Paul lists in Galatians 5. Barbie noticed them showing up in the children as they prayed, and organized ten years of stories around what she saw.

  • 01LoveThe starting place of healing
  • 02JoyCelebrating and believing
  • 03PeaceGod's presence in waiting
  • 04PatienceTrusting God's timing
  • 05KindnessFriendly and generous
  • 06GoodnessReflecting God's heart
  • 07FaithfulnessSecure in God's love, kids pray
  • 08GentlenessA soft word heals
  • 09Self-ControlHoly Spirit direction

Each chapter opens with a reflection on that quality and closes with an invitation to consider what the stories teach. An appendix explains the prayer tools the children use — anointing oil, words of knowledge drawings — so the stories can be read without interruption.

Feel free to read through the book like a story book, or dance around the stories like the children do in prayer.
